Eagle Lunch
by Gary Luhm
(Wildlife Category)

This Eagle landed on a log at the river mouth in Skagit Bay, WA, having just caught a female Common Merganzer.  Feathers were flying as I paddled by, returning from a winter morning shoot.  I moved by to get an up-sun position, and when I did I was able to drive the kayak into the bank so it wouldn't drift.  I shot about half a roll until I didn't think I could do any better, then put the camera away, pushed off with the paddle, and continued on my way up the Skagit River.  Bald Eagles seem to be hunting birds more often these days.  While paddling in the Puget Sound area, I've seen them take Coot, Merganzer, Snow Geese, and Scoter, and try for many others.

Canon E-3; 300mm f/4 lens w/1.4 tele-extender; f/5.6 at 1/750 sec. Fuji Provia 100F.  Hand held.
