The Salton Sea, California
in winter is a marvelous place for birds. Historically, the water level has
gone up and down, sometimes burying towns and shoreline trees, or leaving
seaside docks stranded in cracked mud. Here, Cattle Egrets and a lone Great
Blue Heron roost in a pre-dawn glow.
