| Double Crested Cormorants Drying their Wings
Photographed at the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer near Skamokawa, Washington March
These double-crested cormorants were sitting on a log in Brooks Slough, in a "wing-drying" pose. The microscopic structure of their wings allows their plumage to get wet, thus facilitating underwater pursuit of fish. They asssume this pose to dry their feathers. |
