Biography and Work

Sunny Walter is an Issaquah-based free-lance nature photographer who specializes in wildlife and dramatic-light scenics.  She began her photography career in 1986 -- a natural evolution from her college background in art and mathematics and her desire to capture the natural beauty she saw in her travels.

Since her early retirement in 1995 from a systems engineering career at The Boeing Company, Sunny has combined her photography with travel to wilderness areas, hiking, camping, kayaking, cross-country skiing, and avid pleasure reading.

Environmental Photography

Sunny also invests time and energy in volunteer (and minimal pay) activities -- using her photography and organizational skills to inspire and educate people to value our precious wildlife and the habitat they need to survive.
  • She also did site research for the Washington Wildlife Viewing Guide (Falcon Publishing).

In 1997, Sunny was the Photography Editor of Washington Wildlife Magazine. From 1998 thru 2000, she was on contract with Washington State Tourism  to photograph Washington's beautiful places, historic sites, wildlife, and people having a good time in nature.

In mid-1998, Sunny also started a 2-year process of researching, visiting, and photographing locations for her  Washington Nature Weekends book.  It was published in August, 2001 as a FalconGuide Imprint  by Globe-Pequot Press.  She is currently doing side shows and book signings throughout Washington.

In 2000, Sunny designed and produced her own Washington State nature and photography website -- expanding it to cover the Western US during the subsequent years. She is also co-designer of Subhankar Banerjee's website, World Without Borders and maintains the site.

Sunny has also done photo manipulation work for WA State Tourism and The Mountaineers Photo Group.

She is currently traveling and researching for her next set of books on Where to View (and Photograph) Nature Subjects in Washington State.

Strictly Volunteer
  • She performed in various capacities on the Northwest Exhibition of Environmental Photographers central committee (formerly EDIE and now World in Focus) from 1997 to 2000.
  • Sunny has provided images for many years for use in environmental organization brochures and slide shows and now on the internet.
  • She has also produced musical fade-dissolve slide shows for use in Earth Day and other environmental activities, as well as WWRC lobbying and community outreach.
  • Sunny belongs to the East Lake Washington Audubon Society and assumed the position of Program Coordinator for the 2004-2006 seasons.  She is also active on the Marymoor Park Natural Area Rejuvenation Project.

Photographic Societies and Exhibitions

During the late 1980s and early 90s, Sunny was chairman of the The Mountaineers Photography Group for 2 years, photography field trip coordinator for 4 years, photo field trip research coordinator for 2 years, pro series lecture coordinator for 2 years, and multi-media sub-group co-coordinator for 2 years.  She has researched and led photography outings throughout Washington State since 1986 and continues to enjoy this activity today. In 2004, Sunny assumed the position of chair again.

Sunny has been a member of the Boeing Employees Photographic Society (BEPS)   since 1986.  She served as Treasurer for one year and developed and chaired a monthly Education Night for two years.  She was awarded life membership in 1992 for photographic excellence, received the Outstanding New Member Award in 1987 and Member of the Year Award in 1992, and has twice won the Grand Prize in Annual Slide Competition.

Sunny has taught various photography subjects at BEPS Education Night and in The Mountaineers Basic Nature Photo Class.

Sunny's photographs were accepted into the Northwest Exhibition of Environmental Photographers all three years that she submitted images.  Her work is also part of the traveling Reaching Out, Reaching In Invitational Exhibit.  She also produced a traveling photography exhibit and slide show for The Boeing Company as part of Earth Day.

Sunny recently joined the North American Nature Photography Association.  She attended the annual conference in Portland, Oregon and is a member of the Environmental Committee.
