Chapter 13
Slide Across the Strait, Coastal Raptor Migration at Cape Flattery
10/5/02!

Bahokus Peak is not officially open to the public, but I drove up there two years ago and had a delightful time.  If the road is open and you decide to visit the site, be sure to drive up before noon as the number of migrating hawks tapers off sharply about 2 or 3 p.m.  And please treat the site respectifully - it is Makah Tribal property.

A birder who spent some time up there said one of the highlights for him occurred in the first week in April, 1997 when "well over 600 Sandhill Cranes passed by.  Also on that day there were over 2000 Red-tailed Hawks, 53 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 20 Turkey Vultures, and 4 Golden Eagles."

I was not given official permission by the Makah Nation to include the directions to Bahokus Peak in my book, but will provide them here for anyone who wants to drive up.

From the "T" intersection in the book, turn left (south) and drive 1.2 miles to a junction.  Turn right onto a steep gravel road and drive 2.7 miles to a level spot and another junction.  Turn left, drive 0.2 miles and park near the antenna site.  Walk west about 75 feet up the small hill to the viewing site.

Honor Our Precious Earth, Earth Day Celebration in the Tri-Cities
4/11/02!

Earth Day Celebration in the Tri-Cities
Go to Mid-Columbia Clean up the Earth Day for more information

  • This event has been changed from a festival at Howard Amon Park to a "Clean-up-the-Earth Day," a day where the entire Mid-Columbia region of Washington State spends a few hours working together to beautify the community in celebration of Earth Day.
  • Saturday morning activities will begin with a rally and registration event in the east parking  lot at Columbia Center from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  Volunteers will fan out and spend the morning beautifying our community.  Afterwards, a volunteer hot dog lunch will be held at the Tri-City Stadium, home of the Dust Devils, compliments of Costco and Coca Cola.  In the afternoon, the Mid-Columbia Library System and the Richland Public Library will be hosting educational and fun activities.
  • Activities include: community clean-up projects, Origami butterflies, mural painting project, story time at many libraries, crafts, xerics and native landscaping program, tree planting, plant sale, solar/wind/water expo, various talks, and the "Cities of Flowers" beautification project launch.

Dr. Castilleja will talk about these fascinating creatures and WWF's efforts to protect the few remaining forests critical for the survival of monarchs. Chapter 16
Let the Blooming Begin, Columbia Basin Wildflowers
5/26/02!

Also good in late April:

  • Columbia Gorge hillsides (both sides of river) from Mosier on the Oregon side to Horsethief State Park on the Washington side
If you wait until May, you can find great balsamroot, phlox, parsley, lupine, bitterroot, and other shrub-steppe wildflowers at the following locations:
(all part of my next book to be published in 2004)
  • Red Mountain (Richland)
  • Umtanum Canyon, Quilomene Wildlife Area, and Hayward Hill (Ellensburg area)
  • Swauk Pass just south of Hwy. 2 (east of Leavenworth)
  • Steamboat Rock State Park (south of Grand Coulee)
  • Old Jeep Trail (Sun Lakes State Park)
  • Twin Lakes (south of Creston)
  • Methow Wildlife Area hillsides (north of Winthrop)
I also found hillsides covered with lupine the 3rd week in May south of Waterville off Indian Camp Rd.

Chapter 17
Ballet in White and Black, Grays Harbor Shorebird Festival
5/26/02!

If you spend the weekend on the coast, you might want to purchase Bob Morse's book,
"A Birder's Guide to Coastal Washington."

  • It has great chapters on birding locations right in Aberdeen, at Ocean Shores to the west, and Friends Landing to the east of Aberdeen.
  • It also takes you to excellent locations south of Aberdeen: Johns River Wildlife Area, Bottle Beach State Park (also in my book), Westport, Tokeland, Raymond, Willapa Bay, and long Beach Peninsula.
Bob also includes coastal bird checklists, bird identification photographs, birding organizations and other contacts, and lists of accommodations if you want to stay overnight.
