Butterflies and Blossoms at Glacial Heritage Preserve
 (Spring 2004 Update)

9th Annual Prairie Apppreciation Days at Glacial Heritage Preserve  (May 22, 2004)

The daylong gathering will include self-guided nature trails through prairie, oak woodland, and other habitats staffed by experts on butterflies, wildflowers, geology, history, and prairie restoration.  One of these will be an activity trail geared specifically towards children.
The event is free and open to the public.  It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Prairie Appreciation Day is timed to coincide with the prairies’ best wildflower displays.
Expect to see grasslands dotted with Oregon sunshine, chocolate lilies, bright blue violets,
balsamroot’s showy sunflowers, the frighteningly named death camas, and other wildflowers.
Visitors are also likely to see birds and butterflies found in few other places in the world.

Sponsored by:
  • The Nature Conservancy   or  206-343-4344
  • Friends of Puget Prairies
  • Thurston County Parks and Recreation
  • WA Dept of Fisheries and Wildlife
For more prairie wildflowers and butterflies, see Washington Nature Weekends for directions to Mima Mounds and Scatter Creek.  These were formerly visited as part of Prairie Appreciation Days, but you can do these this spring as self-guided nature walks.
