On the Trail of the Golden Larch -- Fall Color at Harts Pass, North Cascades
11/23/02 

Washington Nature Weekends stated that the largest western larch is located in Oregon.  According to Robert Van Pelt, in his new book, Forest Giants of the Pacific Coast, the four largest western larch trees are located in Montana and Oregon:

  • Seeley Lake Giant, 2940 ft - Jim Girard Memorial Larch Grove, Seeley Lake, Montana
    (nice stand of larches)
  • Burnt Corral Larch, 2750 ft - Burnt Corral Creek near the Starkey Experimental Forest, northeast Oregon
  • McGinnis Meadow Giant, 1970 ft - south of Libbey, Montana
  • Limber Jim Larch, 1870 ft - Elkhorn Mountains of northeast Oregon
The 5th largest larch is near Mount Rainier, Washington
  • Pleasant Valley Larch, 1730 ft - Pleasant Valkley Campground, American River

Changing Seasons, Passing Through -- National Wildlife Refuge Week
11/02/01!

Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge    New Event!

  • A new "Welcome Back the Birds Fest" has been added to NWR Week activities in 2001, according to Washington Birder.  The festival welcomes back wintering birds to Ridgefield NWR.  Activities include a variety of presentations and slide programs, raptors shows, guided field trips, and water excursions.  These are designed for everyone, from the budding naturalist to the most avid birder.
    • Special tours will be offered to view Sandhill Cranes 

    • flying in at sunset to the refuge roosting area.
    • You can also join an archaeologist on a trip back in time to visit

    • the ancient Chinook Indian town that Lewis and Clark visited 
      while traveling their historic voyage to reach the pacific.
    • Special activities are also planned for kids.
