Chapter 38
Haul Out at High Tide, Harbor Seal Pupping in Hood Canal
11/13/01!

One of my photographer friends walked the path out to Henderson Inlet in early October.   She and her friend saw hundreds of seals hauled out on the log booms, large flocks of mergansers, lots of cormorants and shorebirds, and two eagles.

Unfortunately, the kayak / canoe launch was closed off with yellow tape.  I did some research and, according to the Olympian, "the waters of Woodard Bay are closed from Labor Day to April 1 to protect wintering waterfowl. Pigeon guillemots and cormorants roost here, and a purple martin colony has been reestablished in the area."  So if you want to kayak or canoe out to see the seals, go before Labor Day.

For anyone interested in bats, a mixed colony of bats inhabits an abandoned Weyerhauser pier in Henderson inlet.  Huge numbers of bats fly out at dusk each night; they can be seen from the location where you watch the seals.
