Where and When to Go for Spectacular Photo Ops

Petaluma Area Photo Ops

Based on where you live [Petaluma], it seems like this spring is going to be a huge window of opportunity for you to photograph a variety of landscape possibilities as well as wildlife.
  • You may wish to check out the Tule Elk Refuge just west of Interstate 5 south of Buttonwillow.
  • The Kern National Wildlife Refuge has a colony of burrowing owls that can be seen right at the refuge entrance -- to your immediate left as you enter and also to your immediate right.
  • Wildflowers really looked great in your area last year. You may wish to take the drive along Highway 178 east, past Lake Isabella, over Walker Pass (Joshua trees bloom) to Red Rock Canyon State Park (rocks and wildflowers) or to Short Canyon (wildflowers).

Salton Sea birds

Birders reporting very large flocks of geese at the Salton Sea right now: "Snow and Ross's geese - enormous flocks in fields and ponds along Vendel Road."

Death Valley will Live in ColorThis Spring!

Storm I was hoping would water our desert wildflowers put over 6/10 inch at all the Death Valley locations:  http://www.nps.gov/deva/FrameSet-weather.htm

Anza-Borrego 3/4 inch:  http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sandiego/sd24hr_pcp.gif

Also noticed over an inch at the AV State Poppy Reserve but just 1/3 nch at Carrizo Plain NM.  Walker Pass had over an inch which bodes well for the Kern area including Short and Jawbone Canyons.  Bigger potential storm is still due mid week.  Yippee!

Death Valley wildflower update

I just received an e-mail from Park Ranger Charlie Callagan in Death Valley regarding the wildflower bloom. They're guaranteeing a nice wildflower display over the next two months. You can read it on the Wildflower Hotsheet at http://www.calphoto.com/wflower.htm . . .

Almond blooms

I visited the Capay Valley on 2/29.  The almond trees are in partial bloom in this area.  It should be great by next weekend.

I did see a large orchard of almond trees in full flower about two miles west of Winters along SR 128.  The scent from the almond blossoms was fabulous!  These trees are not as old, nor the scenery as dramatic, as in the hills past Capay.
