Where and When to See Eastern US Wildlife
Mammals
Moosepeepers, by Jerry Shine
Wildlife Conservation -- April, 2004

"It's possible to see moose just about anywhere in New England, but some prime viewing locales stand out.
  • In Maine, the Moosehead Lake area, Rangeley Lakes region, numerous ponds in Baxter State Park, and anywhere along Route 201 north of Bingham are considered hotspots.
  • In New Hampshire, Route 3 in the Connecticut Lakes Region is known as "Moose Alley,"  while the lake and river areas of the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge also rate highly for moose sightings.
The best times to see moose are in the few hours around sunrise and sunset, from May to September.  Moose can often be found in or around lakes, but you are just as likely to spot than while driving on nearby roads."
